Piano Triology 解説Piano Trilogy Explanation

This is first of Kosuke Yamaguchi’s CDs to consist entirely of piano trio performances. Although he didn’t exactly make this record in response to a message from God, it seems he was inspired to do when a sudden idea occurred to him.
I think that still counts as a revelation. After all, the piano trio is the most well loved format for listeners of jazz combinations, and at the same time it is also the ensemble that is most faithful to the demands of rhythm. For this album, a total of five pianists, ranging from veterans to newcomers, perform a succession of ballads and medium swings jazz standards.
Kamo-san lives in New York. She has played the organ on numerous occasions, but here she exquisitely cooks up some originals by Bud Powell and Horace Silver. Furuta-san is an up-and-coming youngster. His contributions provide a glimpse of his musical sensibilities, which are not bound exclusively by a bop feeling. Yoshida-san’s forte is his bright and vibrant style of play, which is so light and cheerful that one would never suspect he was convalescing from an illness. Yamamoto-san is a prominent figure in the piano world best known for his rendering of the masterpiece Misty. His superb polished sound and sense of rhythm are both super-first class. And lastly, Kodachi-san is a pianist who is currently performing with Kosuke Yamaguchi Organ Band. She plays in perfect harmony, befitting her status as a regular member.
Prominent Japanese musicians including bassists Okamoto-san and Shibuya-san have joined the band and they form wonderful combinations together with Yamaguchi-san.
To say nothing of Yamaguchi-san’s cymbal work, his drum brush work on this album allows the listener to experience an even more overwhelming sense of drive than usual. As I listened to this disc, I realized that drumbeats we can count and rhythmic music of this caliber are very rare. And of course, when the rhythm is good, it’s all good.

Kosuke Yamaguchi Comment

This time I had a strong wish to record with a piano trio, and fortunately I was able to realize that wish with some wonderful bassists and pianists. Originally I wanted to work with the bassist Yoichi Kobayashi, but in the end this wish did not come true because he became ill and had to retire. However, as a paean to Kobayashi-san, this recording grew into what I consider to be a tremendous performance and it is a treasure for me.
Among the songs on this disc, I have a special feeling for the final track Over the Rainbow. When I was 16 years old, back in the golden age of Western Carnival, Gene Vincent?a huge rock & roll star at the time?came to Japan and gave a passionate rendering of the ballad Over the Rainbow as the last of his hits. Deeply moved by its sheer splendor, I began listening to jazz, and soon after that I set my heart on becoming a jazz musician.
Sixty years have passed since that time, and now at last I have recorded my own version of Over the Rainbow.
It is an unforgettable song for me.
In each of the numbers we played, all of my jazz drumming is recorded as it happened without modification.
I sincerely appreciate the efforts of everyone who has helped in the making of this CD. Thank you.
February 2019, Kosuke Yamaguchi
